7/15/13 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Saturday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 11. July 2012 20:00

Today is a picnic at a friend's house!  Uhoh, this is considered a dining out experinence and sometimes it is even harder because you cannot control what you're "ordering."

I don't know what many of you had planned this weekend, but we were at a cookout from 3:30 until 11:30.  That is right during dinner time.  On top of it, my husband and I had gone on an INTENSE hike with our dogs.  It only takes about an hour after this type of activity for me to be extra hungry.  I was starving by the time 5:00 rolled around (when they served the food).  Another problem was that it was not my family, we were at a large party with not many people that I knew well.  Typically at my own family functions, I have actually brought my own dinner after hearing what was on the "menu."  There was no way I was going to offend my husband's friends he considered family from when he was growing up by bringing my own meal!  This left me stuck with staring at the spread of food for quite awhile.  It was a typical cookout style assortment of foods, baked beans (way too high in sugar), homemade macaroni and cheese (way too high in fat), potato salad (oh, the loads of high fat mayo!), hamburgers, brats, pork, high fat hot dogs, and cheesy, sour creamy dips.  I was literally stuck - truth be told, even what I brought was not great, it was quick and easy.  I had chosen a prepackaged cheddar seasoning (although no sodium was in it, which was a plus!) mixed with low-fat cream cheese and cut up pieces of bagel for dipping.

This was truly frustrating because I was so hungry and when I get low-blood sugar people should stay away from me!  My husband can tell right away and he becomes frantic searching for food to give me otherwise let you be warned:  the wrath of Katie with low-blood sugar is not a pretty sight!  I ended up settling on a piece of pork because it was thin and I knew it had to be about 2 oz., 1 tablespoon of macaroni and cheese, a lot of veggies but no dip, and 1 tablespoon of refried beans.  Unfortunately, I was still STARVING!  This meant that the only other thing I would allow into my mouth was the appetizer I brought because at least I knew what was in it.  I ended up eating way too many bagel pieces with dip and I'm sure the results will reflect tomorrow.  (See, even a person on a Jenny Craig commercial slips up occasionally.)

Carbs, carbs, carbs!  Are you worried about what I eat because you think I have too many carbs?  Until tomorrow...
